Dudley Chalk had to be come a detective with no experience, no training, no clues.

Could you do it?

How to solve the case...

Wishing is a story about two people meeting at a party, but buried within are the clues to finding a real-world object.  Tell me what it is.  Simple.

But how?

Image that I gave you 7 pieces of information about an object:

London
Painting
1533
skull
portrait
double
Holbein

This should lead you to The Ambassadors, a painting in the National Gallery in London by Hans Holbein the Younger (it features in Dudley Chalk, in case you're wondering).  Nothing else fits the information.

Notice that the information is in no real order, and you could have got it from only a few clues.  Holbein, portrait, skull, 1533 might have lead you there.  Or London, painting, Holbein, double, portrait.

There are 7 chapters in Wishing.  Can you see where this is going?  Yes, you've got it.  Each chapter has an answer -- one of those 7 pieces of information.  Because the information is in no real order, and you might not need all 7, I gave you the whole story first before letting you know how to solve it.  You don't need to solve the chapters in order, and you don't need to solve all of them.

How do I find the info in the writing?
It's hidden, obviously.  You'll have to use your imagination, a bit of lateral thinking, a keen eye and reading between the lines. There are anagrams (does a word or phrase just look odd, unnatural, forced?).  Maybe the first letter of each paragraph spells something.  Perhaps there's a code or a cypher in there.  If so, something will tell you.  Most codes and cyphers have names, and the name will be there.

There's always at least four clues in each chapter, usually five.  If the answer is 'Labrador' then there's going to be four or five references to it (the dog, the place, maybe an anagram or code).

What now?

Click the Read Wishing button to read it again with a keener eye, or...
Click the Chapter 1 Cheat button to see how to solve the first chapter.  There's even the answer.  I don't mind giving you one out of seven.

When you think you know what the object is, email me with Wishing in the subject line.  I'll let you know if you're a detective and if you are, I'll send you the book package.

Good luck.
